Measures are being taken to ensure that domestic and commercial consumption of LPG gas becomes more secure, affordable, and efficient. The national regulator for oil and gas in the country, PNGRB, has embarked on an ambitious project to establish an extensive LPG pipeline network in the nation. The purpose behind the project is to enhance energy security and cease the transportation of bulk LPG via roadways by 2030.

In connection with the gigantic project, PNGRB has selected nine LPG pipeline routes within the country. Currently, PNGRB is completing its bid process for four key pipelines, which will span around 2,500 kilometers. These routes are Cherlapally-Nagpur, Shikrapur-Hubli-Goa, Paradip-Raipur, and Jhansi-Sitarganj. According to the regulator, these projects are expected to attract investments of approximately ₹12,500 crore.

Currently, a large number of road tankers are used to transport gas from refineries and import terminals to bottling plants. The pipelines will shift this bulk transport directly to the pipeline system. The PNGRB states that this move will prove more cost-effective than other modes of transportation. Furthermore, these pipelines will also serve as storage facilities during times of crisis, ensuring there will be no shortage of gas supply in the country.

Removing heavy gas tankers from the roads will significantly reduce the risk of road accidents, ensuring safe supply. Reducing gas losses during transit and reducing greenhouse gas emissions will also support India's climate goals.

Regarding this initiative, PNGRB clarified, "India's LPG consumption for cooking and commercial use is considered significant. There is a need to efficiently connect ports and refineries to bottling plants. Although pipelines are the preferred mode of transportation, a significant volume is still transported by bulk tankers."

Key Points from the Government Announcement:

  • Goal: Completely eliminate bulk LPG transportation by road by 2030.
  • Project Cost: Estimated investment of approximately ₹12,500 crore.
  • Scope: Development of four major pipelines initially spanning 2,500 kilometers.
  • Benefits: Reduced road accidents, lower emissions, and cost-effective gas supply.

This suo motu initiative by PNGRB is a milestone in strengthening India's energy logistics network. The goal of achieving complete road transport independence by 2030 will not only create jobs and accelerate regional development, but also realize the Government of India's vision of ensuring accessible, efficient, and sustainable energy for all.
