While the electric car sector in India is picking up pace, automakers are also ramping up the production of EVs in various categories. With this strategy in mind, Hyundai is also gearing up for the release of an electric compact SUV in India, named HE1i, which can potentially be marketed as the Ioniq P in India. According to Hyundai, HE1i would be the company’s next offering after the Bayon.

Ioniq P is said to be based on E-GMP, the same platform on which the globally sold Inster EV is built. It would be available in two configurations: Standard Range and Long Range, although details remain to be seen. Inster EV comes in two models: Standard Range and Long Range, equipped with 42kWh and 49kWh batteries for 355km (WLTP) range.

Imported battery cells will be used initially. However, Hyundai-Kia has a partnership with Exide for locally manufactured cells, but these will not be available this year. Consequently, local sourcing of battery cells will begin at a later date. This new Hyundai EV will feature premium features such as the Pleos Konnct infotainment system and Level-2 ADAS.

Upon launch in India, it will compete with vehicles like the Tata Punch EV, Nexon EV, Syros EV, and Mahindra XUV 3X0 EV. This EV is expected to launch around January 2027.

Hyundai's upcoming new mass-market electric car is part of the brand's electrification target. This new EV will help Hyundai increase its share in the electric segment. However, no sales target has been revealed for this new EV. In India, it includes the Hyundai Creta Electric and Ioniq P.
