In April 2026, electric car sales increased by 75% year-on-year, while electric two-wheeler sales increased by 60.73%. Experts say that the adoption of the new battery rental service is driving the rapid growth in sales of both electric cars and two-wheelers. Furthermore, the increasing number of charging stations is also encouraging this growth.

With the rise of Battery-as-a-Service (BAS), electric car sales are expected to increase further. Currently, companies ranging from Tata Motors to Maruti Suzuki, among others, are providing electric car battery services. Under this service, battery charges are waived upon purchase, reducing the cost of the electric car.

Companies charge a rental fee for the battery upon use. This rental rate varies across companies. Some companies charge 3 rupees per kilometer, while others charge 3.5 to 6 rupees per kilometer.

Car companies say that batteries contribute 35-40 percent to a car's total cost. If Battery as a Service (BAS) becomes popular, electric car sales will certainly accelerate. Tata showroom managers reported that electric car sales have been increasing since the launch of this service. Many two-wheeler companies already offer battery swapping or battery rental.

According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric cars accounted for 6 percent of total car sales in April this year, up from 3.7 percent in the same month last year. This share was 5.1 percent in March this year.

Similarly, the share of electric two-wheelers in total sales reached 9.8 percent in March this year, up from 5.5 percent in April last year. According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the share of electric three-wheelers in cargo-carrying vehicles increased to 33 percent in April, up from 23 percent a year earlier.
