As per K.K. Singh, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT, currently 500,000 professionals are employed in the country to tackle the menace of cyberattacks, and there is a need for 1.3 million professionals to address the same.

On Tuesday, speaking at an event organized by the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) on the usefulness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity issues, he said currently there is no specific law on the issue of cybersecurity, but if the need arises, then a separate law can be made. Currently, the problem of cyberattacks is tackled under IT regulations. Many cyberattacks remain unreported.

Singh stated that his ministry has notified the Digital Data Protection (DPDP) Act, which is expected to come into effect mid-next year. He stated that the industry has already begun preparing for this legislation and will develop affordable solutions to comply with the regulations.

On this occasion, TPCI Chairman Mohit Singla stated that 47 percent of organizations are using generative AI, and 93 percent are expected to begin using AI within the next 12 to 18 months. AI is also being used in deepfakes and cyberattacks.

In 2024, cyber fraud in India resulted in losses of ₹22,845 crore (approximately $2.2 billion). It is not yet clear how widespread the frauds being perpetrated by deepfakes are. Massive losses based on deepfakes have already begun.
