An Afghan athlete Fariba Hashimi has claimed the silver medal in the women’s road race event at the Asian Games on Tuesday. This is the same Fariba Hashimi who had been cycling in the disguise of a man to escape from the Taliban regime.

Hashimi hails from the Faryab province and fled Afghanistan when the Taliban regime was back in power. In Italy, Hashimi kept practicing under the guidance of world champion Alessandra Cappellotto. Hashimi just missed out on the gold medal by clocking in two hours and 50 minutes in the final race.

She said, "I was born in a country where women who dream are attacked. I fought." Hopefully, the next generation will represent the country without fear. Li Guo of China also clocked 2 hours and 50 minutes in this event, winning the gold medal by a margin of seconds. Yi Wing Leung of Hong Kong took the bronze.
