New Delhi, July 30 — President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday congratulated Indian athletes for their performances at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, highlighting a historic one-two finish by para-athletes in the men’s T47 100 metres and a silver medal by long-jumper Murali Sreeshankar.

Dilip Mahadu Gavit won gold in the men’s 100 m T47 with a Games record time of 10.71 seconds. Compatriot Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi took silver with a season-best 10.83 seconds, giving India a double podium in the event.

In a separate message, Murmu praised Sreeshankar for claiming silver in the men’s long jump with a best effort of 8.09 metres. “Warm congratulations to Murali Sreeshankar on winning the silver medal in the men’s long jump at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026! Securing consecutive Commonwealth silver medals is a monumental achievement that makes the entire nation proud. Wishing you continued success and an illustrious career ahead,” she wrote.

The 27-year-old had won silver at the 2022 Birmingham Games with a jump of 8.08 metres, becoming the first Indian male long-jumper to secure a Commonwealth silver.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated Sreeshankar on his second successive Commonwealth medal. “Heartiest congratulations to Murali Sreeshankar on winning the Silver Medal in the Men’s Long Jump Final at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Having also won the Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, Murali has once again brought laurels to the nation, reflecting his remarkable consistency, resilience, and unwavering determination. This achievement is made even more inspiring by his courageous comeback from a career-threatening knee injury,” Singh posted.
