There have been rumors that OnePlus has finally decided to cease developing its Android OS named OxygenOS. The company has announced that from now on, all OnePlus devices would be using Oppo's ColorOS OS, and current users of OnePlus could opt for ColorOS as well. It should also be noted that the company has decided to leave the US and European markets.
The information was provided by OnePlus managers in community posts made in India, the USA, and Europe. This takes place amid speculations regarding changes in Oppo's smartphone brand, namely, Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme.
First, it should be stated that OnePlus has denied the speculations of closure of its activities in India.
In its post on the OnePlus India community forum, the company mentioned that it will switch to ColorOS via ColorOS 17 update, which will be built upon Android 17 OS. It means that all future OnePlus devices will come out pre-installed with ColorOS 17. At the moment, Oppo smartphones already work on ColorOS.
If you own a OnePlus device eligible for future Android updates, the company says you will be given the option to voluntarily update to ColorOS 17 once the software is released.
OnePlus states that this change will streamline software development and enable faster delivery of updates. The company added that this shift will provide users with a "more stable, reliable, and future-ready software experience." OnePlus's OxygenOS has been sharing the same codebase as ColorOS since 2021, and OnePlus devices in China are already utilizing it. OnePlus's sister brand, Realme, is also phasing out future plans for its own Android skin, Realme UI. Like OnePlus, all new Realme phones will run on ColorOS 17 in the future.
According to an India Today report, OnePlus confirmed in posts across various community forums that it is shutting down its business in the US and Europe. The phone manufacturer stated that it decided to halt the rollout of new products in these regions as part of a "proactive global strategy adjustment."
This means no new OnePlus devices will be launched in North America or Europe moving forward. According to the company, support for existing users will continue in compliance with warranty obligations and consumer protection laws. Remaining stock will continue to be sold in North America and Europe.
Just like in India, users in the US and Europe will also have the option to update eligible devices to ColorOS 17.
Apart from the US and Europe, OnePlus's product roadmap for China will remain unchanged. Conversely, Realme will now focus on select international markets and stop launching new devices in China.
Earlier reports had hinted that OnePlus might exit India as well, a few months after shutting down operations in the US and Europe. However, OnePlus maintains that India remains one of the company's most important global markets.
In a statement to India Today Tech, OnePlus said, "OnePlus India's operations are continuing as usual, and all local activities are running smoothly. We urge the media to exercise restraint before propagating unverified rumors." In a blog post, OnePlus highlighted that it has launched four new products in recent months and plans to launch the OnePlus N6x soon. The company is now also providing services to customers through Oppo's after-sales network.
In short, the Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme brands will continue to be available in India just as before. Realme's operations are shutting down only in China. Additionally, OnePlus is exiting the US and European markets.
