Many individuals view telecommuting as a flexible way to work; however, there has been an increase in doubts about telecommuting due to recent developments by a particular company. There was a post on Reddit regarding a new policy implemented by the company regarding work from home, which has since become controversial.
The employee noted that a huge layoff occurred at the firm, reducing the workforce from forty workers to fifteen. Due to these layoffs, the company terminated its lease agreement for the larger space used by the company and moved into a small office within the same building. Due to the lack of seating arrangements for all employees in the new office, the company decided to implement work-from-home on a rotational basis.
According to the post, the new office, located on the fifth floor, only has four seats available. In such a situation, some employees will work from the office, while others will work from home. This arrangement will be changed after a few weeks, and employees currently in the office will work from home, while those working from home will be called to the office.
While this decision initially seemed like a relief to employees, a condition that emerged later disappointed many. The employee explained that they had thought they would now be able to work from their hometowns, but the company clarified that work from home was only permitted within the Delhi-NCR region.
The company has decided to implement a GPS-based attendance system for this purpose. According to the employee, attendance will only be recorded if the employee's location is found to be within Delhi-NCR. If an employee is outside the region, their attendance will not be recorded.
The employee explained that their boss didn’t provide an official rationale for the policy, but he believes that the company desires the power to call them into the office at any time. The employee was frustrated with this and asked whether working from home really meant that employees worked from home and not where they wished.
The post quickly went viral on social media, eliciting mixed reactions. Some users called it an invasion of employee privacy and excessive surveillance. One user commented, "This is like modern-day slavery, normalized." Another said, "I didn't know companies could impose GPS monitoring on employees like this."
On the other hand, many supported the company's decision. Some users pointed out that large multinational companies also implement such policies. They argued that allowing employees to work from anywhere could make it difficult to call them to the office when needed. Furthermore, some companies impose such conditions to avoid work disruptions due to problems like power and internet.
