Lions Club Sirsa United charter president Sandeep Mehta marked his birthday on Sunday with a day of service. He spent time with hearing- and speech-impaired children at the RKJ Welfare Sansthan on Rania Road, sharing joy and treats with them, and organised a sawamani of green fodder for cows at the Chaudhary Devi Lal Gaushala.
Support for a Child With Thalassaemia
The biggest act of the day was financial help for Harshit, a child suffering from thalassaemia. A sum of ₹1,20,201 was deposited directly into his father’s bank account. Members prayed for the child’s speedy recovery. Club members, along with Mehta’s friends, acquaintances and family, contributed to the effort.
Why It Matters: The Hidden Cost of Thalassaemia
Thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder in which the body cannot make enough healthy haemoglobin. Many children with severe forms need regular blood transfusions and lifelong treatment, which can place a heavy financial and emotional burden on families. Community support, both through funds and regular blood donation, can make a real difference to such families.
The event also reflected a growing trend of people marking personal milestones with acts of service instead of lavish celebrations.
Dignitaries Present
Lions District Governor Sanjay Gandhi, Second Vice District Governor Lion Puneet Bansal, Zone Chairman Krishan Gumbar and Lions Club Sirsa president Pradeep Mehta attended and praised the initiative.
Club members present included charter secretary Pradeep Makkar (Advocate), director Hardeep Singh, vice president Mayur Mehta, joint secretary Amit Taneja, health chairman Rajesh Gupta, education chairman Atul Bansal, Lion Tamer Rohit Mittal, event managers Rishikant and Praveen Babbar, second vice president Heera Garg and Tail Twister Vikas Tuteja, among others.
“Strength to Keep Serving”
Thanking everyone, Mehta prayed on the occasion of Navratri for the strength to keep working for society and humanity.
The Bottom Line
For Sandeep Mehta, the best birthday gift was the chance to bring hope to others, from children at a welfare home to a family fighting thalassaemia.
