The Agarwal Sabha Sirsa celebrated the jayanti of Maharaja Agrasen with a large programme at Shri Maharaja Agrasen School on Sunday evening. Families from the Agarwal community and across the city attended, with cultural performances continuing late into the night.

Former Haryana Minister of State for Home and Haryana Lokhit Party chief Gopal Kanda was the chief guest. The programme began with the lighting of a lamp and garlanding of Maharaja Agrasen’s statue by Kanda and special guests, including industrialists Bhushan Saraogi, Sunil Gupta and Mahavir Jamalia, Bhura Mal Mittal and BJP leader Gobind Kanda.

Call for a Heart Hospital

The biggest announcement of the evening came from Kanda. Pointing to the rising number of heart patients in Sirsa, he said a super-speciality heart hospital should be built in Maharaja Agrasen’s name. He urged the Maharaja Agrasen School Trust to take the lead and pledged ₹5 crore towards the project.

Kanda also spoke about Maharaja Agrasen’s message of equality and service for all communities. He said that, following that path as a minister, he had helped secure land for both the Agarwal and Arora Vansh dharamshalas, and that former Chief Minister Manohar Lal had named the Sirsa Medical College after Baba Sarsai Nath on his recommendation.

Donations Announced

Donor Contribution
Gopal Kanda ₹5 lakh to Agarwal Sabha; ₹5 lakh to Maharaja Agrasen School; ₹5 crore pledged for proposed heart hospital
Bhushan Saraogi, Sunil Gupta, Mahavir Jamalia ₹1 lakh each
Bhura Mal Mittal ₹31,000

Students Bring History Alive

Students of the Maharaja Agrasen Girls Senior Secondary School and a team from Sonipat presented performances on Maharaja Agrasen’s life and message, along with Raas dance and tableaux. Students also explained the 18 gotras of the Agarwal community and the tradition of “ek rupaya, ek eent” (one rupee, one brick).

Why It Matters: An Old Idea of Community Support

The “ek rupaya, ek eent” tradition is linked to Maharaja Agrasen’s city of Agroha: every new family settling there received one rupee and one brick from each household, enough to build a home and start a business. The idea of collective support for the community’s well-being is reflected in the evening’s call for a heart hospital. If the proposal moves forward, it could bring specialised cardiac care closer to people in Sirsa, who often travel to bigger cities for such treatment.

Agarwal Sabha president Sanjay Sahuwala said the Agarwal community leads in social service work, while Maharaja Agrasen School Committee president Anil Ganeriwala praised the Kanda family’s social work.

The Bottom Line

Sirsa’s Agrasen Jayanti celebration combined culture and community with a significant pledge. The real test will be whether the proposed heart hospital takes shape.
