On Maha Navami, Monday, October 19, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath used the festival’s focus on the divine feminine to highlight his government’s schemes for girls and women. Speaking to reporters in Gorakhpur, he explained the financial support available to families with daughters.

What the Kanya Sumangala Yojana Offers

CM Yogi said, “Under the Chief Minister Kanya Sumangala Yojana, the state government provides financial assistance of ₹25,000 to families from the birth of a girl child through different stages of her education. When a girl reaches marriageable age, the government provides assistance of ₹1 lakh for her marriage.”

In simple terms, the aid is given in parts at different stages of a girl’s life, from birth to schooling, to encourage families to support their daughters’ education.

Faith Reflected in Governance

The Chief Minister said the values behind Navratri worship are also part of how his government works. “Our rituals dedicated to Jagat Janani Maa Bhagwati are not limited to worship; they are also reflected in the practical functioning of governance and administration. Our Mission Shakti campaign is inspired by this very principle and is based on the themes of women’s safety, respect and self-reliance,” he said.

Mission Shakti: Safety Measures for Women

He said the government has set up women’s help desks at every police station to handle complaints. He also pointed to the 1090 women’s helpline and said each police station has a separate room for women’s safety issues. Female beat officers and women Sub-Inspectors help women resolve their problems, he added.

Record Crowds at Vindhyavasini Dham

Speaking about Navratri, CM Yogi said the new corridor at Maa Vindhyavasini Dham has drawn huge numbers of devotees. “Since the construction of the new corridor at Maa Vindhyavasini Dham, lakhs of devotees have been visiting the shrine. Yesterday, more than 25 lakh devotees offered prayers and performed rituals there. A huge crowd has gathered since early morning today as well. I believe that around 20 to 25 lakh devotees will visit Maa Vindhyavasini Dham today too,” he said.

Kanya Pujan at Gorakhnath Temple

On the significance of the day, he said, “Today is Navami, the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri. The ninth manifestation of Jagat Janani Maa Bhagwati bestows all kinds of spiritual accomplishments. On this occasion, every follower of Sanatan Dharma expresses devotion to this tradition and festival while showing respect for women through the ritual of worshipping young girls.”

He added, “It is my good fortune that today, on the auspicious occasion of Navami during Sharadiya Navratri, I have had the opportunity to participate in the sacred tradition of Gorakhnath Temple by worshipping young girls and serving them a feast as part of the Bhandara.”

Why It Matters

For many families, especially in rural and low-income households, staged financial help can make the difference in keeping a daughter in school. By linking the scheme to Kanya Pujan, the Chief Minister framed the ritual’s respect for girls as something that should continue through practical support.

What Families Should Do

Eligible families can check the scheme’s terms and application process through official UP government channels or their local administration.
