India purchased the M777A2 ULH from the US as part of its plans to increase the capacity of its artillery particularly in mountains. According to the notification, India has requested long-term maintenance support for the M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. This package will include support equipment, spare parts, repair and return services, training, technical assistance, field service representatives, depot capability development, and elements related to logistics and program support. The estimated cost of this support package is $230 million.

In a separate notification, the US Department of Defense stated that India has requested maintenance support services for AH-64E Apache helicopters, engineering, technical, and logistics support from the US government and private contractors, technical documentation, training, and other related program support. The estimated cost of the proposed support package for Apache helicopters is $198.2 million.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin will be the prime contractors for the Apache helicopter support program, while UK-based BAE Systems will be the prime contractor for the M777 howitzer support program.

According to the US Department of Defense, the proposed support package for the helicopters and howitzers aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives and will further strengthen the India-US strategic partnership. The department stated that India is a key defense partner for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions. This deal will help enhance India's capability to address current and future security challenges, strengthen domestic defense, and deter regional threats.
