One of India’s most prestigious legal institutions is set for a major infrastructure boost. Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday assured the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) that the state government would extend full support, including land and funds, for its campus expansion in Bengaluru.
Foundation Stone for New Facilities
Shivakumar laid the foundation stone for the construction of the South Block, auditorium and student centre at NLSIU on the Jnana Bharathi campus in Nagarabhavi, Bengaluru. The ceremony was held in the presence of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the government was committed to meeting the institution’s infrastructure requirements.
A Moment of Pride for Karnataka
Recalling the university’s early days, Shivakumar said: “I am proud that Karnataka took the lead in establishing the National Law School. During my days as a student leader, the launch of this institution was celebrated with tremendous enthusiasm across the country. The government is always ready to protect and develop this prestigious institution.”
No Worries Over Land
Responding to concerns about land availability for the expansion, the Chief Minister said the university need not worry.
“Whether it is seven acres or 10 acres, the government is committed to providing whatever you need. Both land allocation and financial assistance will be extended,” he assured.
Congratulating the Vice-Chancellor and the university team, Shivakumar expressed confidence that the new infrastructure would help NLSIU nurture future leaders committed to upholding democracy and the rule of law.
Who Attended
Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, Ranga Shankara co-founder and actor Arundhati Nag, NLSIU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir Krishnaswamy, Chief Minister’s Economic Adviser L.K. Ateeq and Advocate General Shashikiran Shetty were among those present.
Why It Matters
NLSIU, India’s first national law school, pioneered the five-year integrated law degree model that later inspired a network of national law universities across the country. As student intake and academic programmes grow, physical space has become a key constraint for leading institutions in dense urban centres like Bengaluru. A clear, open-ended commitment of land and funds from the state removes one of the biggest hurdles to that growth.
The announcement also carries political significance. Shivakumar took oath as Chief Minister in June after serving as Deputy Chief Minister under Siddaramaiah, and backing a flagship institution with national standing signals his government’s intent to project Karnataka as a hub for higher education.
The Bigger Picture
The presence of the Chief Justice of India and the High Court Chief Justice underlines the importance the legal fraternity attaches to NLSIU. Stronger infrastructure at such institutions directly shapes the quality of lawyers, judges and policymakers entering public life.
What Comes Next
With the foundation stone laid, attention will now turn to how quickly the South Block, auditorium and student centre are completed, and how the state’s promised land and financial support are formally allocated in the months ahead.
