This didn’t just happen out of nowhere. India’s entertainment boom is a mix of cheap mobile data, a streaming landscape that’s still super competitive, live events going mainstream, and gaming turning into something huge almost overnight.
How Big Is Big?
Look at the numbers—no fluff. The FICCI-EY Media & Entertainment Report says the sector ballooned by about 9% in a year, hitting ₹2.78 trillion in 2025. Digital media alone broke past the ₹1 trillion mark. Live events? They grew a whopping 44%. If you add gaming, animation, VFX, and extended reality, the overall sector should pass ₹3 lakh crore in 2026, heading toward ₹3,067 billion by 2027.
But numbers don’t really sink in until you see what’s behind them.
The Streaming Battle Hits Home
When Reliance and Disney joined forces to create JioStar, it wasn’t just another corporate shake-up. It showed how seriously platforms chase Indian viewers now. JioStar plans to pour nearly ₹33,000 crore into new content for FY26, focusing almost entirely on regional language programs and sports, not just English-based originals.
That shift matters more than you’d think. A Tamil crime drama or Bhojpuri comedy special doesn’t need a theater anymore—it just needs a strong algorithm and a cheap data plan. Indian OTT revenue is on track to grow at 15% per year through FY28, which is among the highest rates globally. Why? Because these platforms finally decided to build content for India, not just shuffle in leftovers.
Concerts Aren’t Just a Side Show
A few years ago, seeing a big international band headline an Indian stadium was rare. Now, it’s business as usual. Coldplay’s gigs in Ahmedabad alone pulled in around ₹641 crore from hotels, cab rides, local snack stalls, and merchandise. Bring Me the Horizon’s “Dil Luminati” tour reportedly added ₹943 crore to the economy with similar ripple effects.
India hosted more than 34,000 live concerts in 2025. That’s no longer a quirky pastime—it’s an engine with its own supply chain: audio experts, ticketing giants like BookMyShow, venue teams, and an events industry that overshadows almost anything comparable elsewhere. EEMA says India’s organized events sector is worth ₹3.5–4 lakh crore, supporting over a crore jobs in total.
Gaming Takes the Lead
Ask a young person in an Indian city what they did on their phone yesterday, and odds are they were playing a game, not watching a film. India’s online gaming sector is growing at about 19% yearly, set to hit ₹39,600 crore by FY28. Jobs in gaming doubled from about 100,000 to 250,000 between 2023 and 2025.
Local games and fantasy sports, especially those tied to cricket (which is practically religion here), have created a massive new market. Add animation and VFX studios—many working quietly on international projects and Hollywood flicks—and you end up with a creative-tech economy that’s exporting both talent and content.
What’s Fueling All This?
A few key factors cut across everything:
- Cheap, fast internet. India’s low data prices have opened digital entertainment to everyone, not just big cities but also small towns and rural areas.
- Young people with spending power. A huge working-age crowd has disposable cash for subscriptions and event tickets.
- Advertisers following audiences. Digital ad spending jumped 26% to ₹947 billion in 2025, taking up almost two-thirds of all ad revenue. TV ad money is now funding digital content.
- Regional and local language content. Platforms realized that Hindi and English aren’t enough, so investing in regional languages is now essential.
- Government support. The 2026–27 budget plans for AVGC Content Creator Labs in 15,000 schools and 500 colleges to help build the next wave of creative and tech talent.
What’s Next?
It’s not all smooth sailing. Content costs are rising, grabbing subscriber attention is tough, and rules for gaming and streaming are still changing. But the direction is clear. Maharashtra’s IT minister called Mumbai the “creative capital,” and the money flowing in backs up that claim.
The biggest shift isn’t about the numbers—it’s about the mindset. India’s entertainment sector used to stay local: Bollywood, cricket, TV soaps. Now, it’s being built and funded as a digital-first, export-ready, regionally diverse powerhouse based in India. That change, more than any single number, is what makes the ₹3 lakh crore milestone so significant.
