New technology is expected to lower production costs, improve energy efficiency, and strengthen the company’s position in India’s growing infrastructure market.
Rathi Steel and Power Limited has achieved a significant operational milestone after successfully conducting a trial run of its Hot Charging process for Mild Steel (MS) billets, a development that could enhance production efficiency, reduce costs, and support the company’s sustainability goals.
In a regulatory filing with the BSE on June 6, the company announced that it had successfully undertaken the trial run of Hot Charging of MS billets to its TMT bar mill. The process will be utilized for manufacturing high-quality Fe 550 and Fe 550D grade MS TMT rebars, which are widely used in infrastructure and construction projects.
The successful implementation of the Hot Charging technology enables the direct transfer of hot billets from the continuous casting machine to the rolling mill, significantly reducing the need for reheating. This is expected to lower fuel consumption, minimize scale loss, and improve overall operational efficiency.
The company highlighted that the process also delivers substantial environmental benefits by optimizing thermal energy utilization and reducing carbon emissions. The initiative aligns with growing industry focus on sustainable manufacturing practices and environmental, social and governance (ESG) objectives.
A key outcome of the trial run was the successful production of Fe 550D grade MS TMT rebars, a premium category of construction steel known for its superior tensile strength, enhanced ductility, and high seismic resistance. These characteristics have made the product increasingly sought after by infrastructure developers and leading real estate companies.
The company believes the technological advancement will help strengthen its product portfolio while improving manufacturing economics. By reducing energy consumption and production costs, the initiative is expected to support profitability and enhance competitiveness in the steel market.
The development comes at a time when demand for high-quality construction steel is being driven by continued investments in infrastructure, housing, and urban development across India.
Rathi Steel stated that the successful trial run marks an important step in its efforts to improve operational efficiencies, expand value-added product offerings, and cater to the evolving requirements of the country’s infrastructure sector.
