Role of Microorganism for maintaining Menstrual Hygiene

One of main public health concern, especially for woman is Menstrual Hygiene. Woman form well educated and rich community of the society does not worried about menstrual hygiene practice because they have inbuilt practice for that and also they have easy assay to lots of menstrual hygiene products such as Sanitary pads, Tampon and Menstrual cup. But the main concern is for the uneducated and poor girls and woman, as they are not even aware of hygienic practices and also does not have access to such products. That is a lacuna of our society as the market prise of a simple sanitary pad is of high cost. Thus they bound to use normal cloths every times.

Even at this 20th Century; still there is a psychological barrier people can’t discuss this menstrual hygiene practice and product openly. Even those women suffering from vaginal diseases (e.g., toxic shock syndrome) many a time does not consult doctors, and remain untreated. Whatever the social issue or psychological barrier among peoples! But the good thing is that our mother nature gifted a woman body with some special microorganism known as vaginal microflora, that protect the women vagina form invading pathogens. Those microorganism are capable of producing acid or lytic enzymes that can prevent Vaginitis in many ways.

I being a microbiologist, always love to explore beneficial microorganism that can adverse the effect of pathogenic microorganism and help the host to prevent diseases. One of the predominant vaginal microorganism is Lactobacillus sp. that can protect against major pathogen such as Candida vaginitis

Lactobacillus sp. of bacterial produces lactic acid that reduce the pH of the vagina, thus make chemical barrier for pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Researcher also isolated and study several strain of lactobacilli bacteria such as Lactobacillus crispatus that produces hydrogen peroxide as protective measure from urogenital infection.

Now a day’s sanitization practice is inbuilting in order to protect our self from Corona virus (COVID19), along with that we must adopt this sanitization practice for Menstrual Health. If anyone uses cloth it should be disinfected or sanitised by soap and boiling water for 10minutes the same way menstrual cup used to disinfect. Using antiseptic liquid like Dettol and Savlon can be added adventage to maintain hygienic practice. People should make aware of Menstrual Hygiene.
