New Delhi, July 29 — Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday congratulated athletes Gulveer Singh and Harjinder Kaur after both secured silver medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.

Shah took to X to acknowledge Gulveer Singh’s historic performance in the men’s 10,000 metres and Harjinder Kaur’s result in the women’s 69 kg weightlifting category.

“Kudos to Gulveer Singh for setting the remarkable milestone of winning India’s first-ever medal in the 10000M in the Commonwealth Games with a silver. Your feat will inspire budding players to win more honours for the nation. Best wishes for your future endeavours,” Shah wrote.

Gulveer became the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000 m. Competing in rain-soaked conditions, the national record holder remained with the lead group before producing a strong final-lap surge to finish in 27:49.78. Australia’s Ky Robinson took gold.

The result adds to Gulveer’s earlier achievements, which include a bronze medal at the Asian Games and two gold medals at the Asian Athletics Championships. The performance further establishes him as one of India’s leading long-distance runners.

Shah also congratulated Harjinder Kaur following her silver in the women’s 69 kg weightlifting event. “India continues its medal haul in weightlifting. Way to go, Harjinder Kaur. Your well deserved victory with a silver medal in women’s 69 Kg in #CWG2026 symbolises your hard work and dedication. Many more triumphs will shine in your path,” he posted.

Harjinder recorded a total of 227 kg, lifting 101 kg in the snatch and 126 kg in the clean and jerk. Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau won gold with 240 kg, while Australia’s Nya Phebe Hayman claimed bronze with 218 kg.

The Punjab weightlifter’s podium finish contributed to India’s continued strength in the discipline at the Glasgow Games, where weightlifting has again ranked among the country’s leading medal sources.
