Hacking or cyber attacks on computer systems of institutions running PHP have been a matter of concern as there have been vulnerabilities in the PHP coding that can be exploited by hackers or cyber attackers.

In order to safeguard against this, CERT has advised those using PHP to update their computer systems immediately and contact CERT in case they face any issues. It is stated that the government systems of some countries like Canada and Europe have shut down because of fear of cyber attack through PHP.

Last Wednesday, data from SBI and eMudra, which is a firm engaged in digital certificate services, was compromised in a cyber attack.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has taken the issue of eMudra data being publicly disclosed seriously and has announced the formation of a committee to investigate the matter. CERT has warned that a cyber attacker could remotely attack or hack PHP and take control of the server.

Experts say that the PHP language is used for 70 percent of internet operations. If a cyber attacker takes control of the server, it could prove dangerous for any government organization.

Experts note that when a person visits a website, logs in, and searches for something, PHP processes the search and sends the correct result. If PHP is weak, the information may be incorrect or unavailable. Based on the symptoms observed by CERT, hackers could weaken PHP.
