In order to help the welfare of the backward and underprivileged section of the society, especially the disabled, the old and the widows, the Central Government has decided that the National Social Assistance Program (NSAP) will continue for another five years, till 2030-31. In addition, for offering significant help to the disabled section of the society, there have been changes in the pension scheme.
Pension will be available from the time of birth of a person till his/her disability reaches 40 percent. At present, the provision of pension is only for those persons who are above 18 years of age and have 80 percent disability. In addition, there has also been an increase in the pension amount.
This proposal for the Rural Development Department was approved by the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday. The name of the scheme and three schemes associated with it have also been changed.
Under this initiative, the currently operational National Social Assistance Program will be renamed the Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana (PMSAY). The Divyangjan, Old Age, and Widow Pension Schemes under this program have been renamed after the Prime Minister.
Except for the disabled pension scheme, no changes have been made to the senior citizens', widows', and family benefit schemes. All will continue in their current form.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, while providing information on the Cabinet decisions, stated that a total of ₹53,428 crore will be spent on this program over the next five years. Its benefits will benefit 32 million people in the country.
This includes approximately 22.1 million elderly people, 2.7 million disabled people, 6.7 million widows, and 35.9 million socially vulnerable people.
The pension for disabled people has also been increased. In which now the age group of 0-79 will get a pension of Rs. 375 and the age group of 80 and above will get Rs. 625 per month.
