Mumbai: India’s largest private lender, HDFC Bank, entered a new leadership chapter on Tuesday as Anup Bagchi took charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. In an exchange filing, the bank said Sashidhar Jagdishan vacated office as MD & CEO at the close of business hours on October 26, 2026, on completion of his tenure, and Bagchi assumed charge effective October 27, 2026.
The bank thanked Jagdishan for his strategic vision and commitment, crediting his leadership with strengthening its performance, organisational culture and customer-centric approach. It also acknowledged his pivotal role in completing one of corporate India’s largest mergers.
The handover was set in motion earlier this month. After the Reserve Bank of India gave its approval, the board cleared Bagchi’s appointment for three years from October 27, subject to shareholder approval, with his term running until October 26, 2029. Jagdishan had informed the board in August that he would not seek reappointment.
Bagchi arrives from the rival ICICI ecosystem. Associated with the ICICI Group since 1992, he was Executive Director of ICICI Bank from 2017 to 2023, earlier led ICICI Securities as MD and CEO, and has headed ICICI Prudential Life Insurance since June 2023. The bank’s board had sent two names to the RBI for the top job: Bagchi and its own Deputy Managing Director, Kaizad Bharucha.
A Mixed Inheritance
Bagchi takes over at a time when the lender is navigating a mixed earnings environment. Earlier this month, HDFC Bank reported a net profit of Rs 19,610 crore for the second quarter of FY27, up 5.2 per cent year-on-year but below analysts’ expectations. Net interest income rose 9.7 per cent to Rs 34,619 crore, short of the Rs 34,991 crore estimate, while net interest margin stood at 3.16 per cent. The bank said higher provisions and softer-than-expected NII weighed on performance, even as loans and deposits grew robustly.
Governance questions also sit on his desk. The bank has confirmed it is investigating a possible leak of confidential information, following reports earlier in October that an internal probe had found two senior executives had disclosed such information. “In line with our policies, an internal review into this matter is currently underway to gather and evaluate all relevant facts,” the bank’s spokesperson said, adding that it would not discuss the review to protect the process and the privacy of those involved. “Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings, once the review is complete,” the spokesperson said.
The change at the top caps an eventful year. In March, then Chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned, citing differences between his personal values and certain practices at the bank. Deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha has also sought cessation of his services effective December 31.
For investors and customers alike, the first months of Bagchi’s tenure will be closely watched. Restoring earnings momentum, closing the internal review with credibility and building a stable senior team will define whether this transition marks a steady reset for one of India’s most systemically important banks. Bagchi’s track record in scaling ICICI Bank’s retail franchise suggests where his early focus may lie, but the numbers in the coming quarters will tell the real story.
